What is SVAN?

SVAN stands for Saratoga Vital Aging Network. The Saratoga Vital Aging Network (SVAN) is a new organization operating under the auspices of the Saratoga Institute. It is located in Saratoga Springs, New York. Its members are people fifty-five years old and older, living in the community, who are entering or living in the third phase of life.

SVAN's purpose is to promote self-determination, civic engagement and personal growth for people as they age, through education and advocacy.

This is SVAN's plan of action for people fifty-five years old and older living in this community:

  • To promote self-determination through:
         Health and wellness programs
         Opportunities beyond retirement
         Development of personal strengths

  • To promote civic engagement through:
Being informed about issues that impact older adults
Participating in relevant public policy decisions
Grassroots organizing and advocacy for aging-friendly communities

  • To promote personal growth through:
          Opportunities for continued education
          Options for meaningful work
          Connections to the community
          Cultural exploration
